"Evocation"
EVOCATION - evo·ca·tion| ˌē-vō-ˈkā-shən: the act of bringing or recalling a feeling, memory, or image to the conscious mind.
Each year I challenge myself to push my creative boundaries. Evolve new techniques for shooting and create work that I find inspiring and fresh.
This exhibition carries the title “EVOCATION” -- ‘the act of bringing or recalling a feeling, memory, or image to the conscious mind.’
"Evocation" was on display August and September 2019 in the Alpine Central building of Mt Buller Alpine resort, Victoria Australia.
These images capture what are personal memories for me. Snippets that evoke a place and a particular time. Like a familiar scent or musical refrain the associated emotions; these works are about memory, recollection and an emotional recall. Although this work is deeply personal I like to think there is a connection that others will also identify with, a whisp of memory from an evening by the ocean or a moment in a quiet snow-covered place.
This somewhat dreamy photographic collection represents a shift in creative direction as I delve into the sentiments and memories conjured up by my ‘special places’ in the ocean and the mountains. I relish exploring themes of escape and release, memory and nostalgia and the connection I feel to the energy that comes from these wild and untamed places. "Evocation” feels like a good explanation for this new work.
There are a few distinct series in this exhibition and I hope people connect with them and perhaps unlock their own memories or feelings as they spend time with these images.
From misty moments on Mt Buller at the base of the old Blue Bullet chairlift and a memory of the now demolished Kooroora building in the village square, through to dramatic aerial captures of the resort in black and white, to dreamy pastel ‘painting with light’ by the ocean’s edge. There are some techniques and styles of working that I continue to finesse and evolve. I am particularly enjoying using a unique “painting” process I've experimented with, using a special combination of movement and in-camera adjustments to give exciting and varied effects. This exhibition certainly ventures into new artistic terrain not always seen in contemporary photography and territory that is energising for my craft and something I will continue to develop and explore.
EVOCATION opens on 7 August at Mt Buller’s Alpine Central through September.
